How to use Google’s Keyword Planner Tool

Google’s keyword tool has been a great tool for any SEO consultant.

On August 28th, 2013, Google’s keyword tool has been replaced with the Keyword Planner, a tool that “combines the functionality of Keyword Tool and Traffic Estimator to make it easier to plan search campaigns” according to Google’s official page.

Using the Keyword Planner

The Keyword Planner requires you to log in before you can use it. (which is different from google keywords tool. Click on Tools and Analysis –> Keyword Planner from the top menu. Next, click on Search for keyword and ad group ideas.

Once you enter in your keywords to research, click the Get ideas button. Click on the Keyword ideas tab to get started.

Analyzing the Results

At this point, you’ll notice that there are no Global and Local monthly searches from back in the day when we had Keyword Tool. You now need to  setup your  Targeting options

1) The geographic location

2) The language

3) The network you are searching on

4) Negative keywords

You can also set a minimum amount of monthly searches to narrow down your goals quicker.

Keyword Types

I recommend using the setting “Exact” match.

Historical Research

This is helpful especially if some words are going into a downward trend. A very BASIC analogy would be something like “gangnam style” or “obama care” .

You’ll notice the rise and dip in popularity since they are related to something that trends in a moment in time.

Save your Keywords.

Save it to your plan and Voila
