Technical SEO Checklist for Mauritius Websites in 2026 (Core Web Vitals, Schema & Crawlability)

A practical technical SEO checklist for Mauritius websites — Core Web Vitals, schema markup, crawlability and the fixes that move rankings.

Good content on a technically broken website rarely ranks. Google's systems — and, increasingly, the AI tools summarising and citing web pages — need to be able to crawl, render and understand a page before any of the writing on it matters. Most Mauritius business websites we audit have at least three or four items on this checklist unaddressed, often without the owner realising anything is wrong, because the site "looks fine" to a human visitor even when it is quietly failing behind the scenes.

This is a practical, non-exhaustive checklist covering the technical issues that most commonly hold back Mauritius websites in 2026. It pairs with our broader guide to SEO in Mauritius and our companion piece on AI search optimisation, which depends entirely on the technical health covered here.

Core Web Vitals: Google's Speed and Experience Metrics

Core Web Vitals are a set of measurable page-experience metrics Google uses as a ranking signal. The three that matter most:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — how long the main visible content takes to load. Target: under 2.5 seconds.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP) — how responsive the page feels when a visitor clicks or taps. Target: under 200 milliseconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — how much the page visually jumps around as it loads. Target: under 0.1.

Mauritius internet connections are predominantly mobile and, while 4G and fibre coverage are strong, they are not uniform across the island. A site optimised for a fast fibre connection in Ebène can still perform poorly for a visitor on mobile data in a rural area — test on a throttled mobile connection, not just your office wifi. Google's free PageSpeed Insights and Search Console's Core Web Vitals report are the standard tools for measuring this.

The most common local causes of poor Core Web Vitals: unoptimised hero images (multi-megabyte photos served at full resolution to a mobile screen), render-blocking JavaScript from chat widgets and marketing pixels loaded before the page content, and web fonts that cause visible text reflow as they load.

Crawlability: Can Google Actually Find and Read Your Pages?

A page that is not properly crawlable might as well not exist for SEO purposes, regardless of its content quality. Check:

  • robots.txt is not accidentally blocking pages you want indexed — a surprisingly common issue after a site migration or redesign.
  • XML sitemap exists, is submitted in Google Search Console, and is kept current as pages are added or removed.
  • Internal linking connects every important page to at least one other page on the site — an orphaned page with no internal links pointing to it is far less likely to be crawled and indexed regularly.
  • Canonical tags are set correctly, especially on sites with both a WWW and non-WWW version, or HTTP and HTTPS versions, still technically accessible.
  • Redirect chains are cleaned up — a URL that redirects through two or three hops before reaching its destination wastes crawl budget and dilutes ranking signals.

Mobile-Friendliness Is Not Optional

Google indexes the mobile version of your site as the primary version for ranking purposes, and with the majority of Mauritian web traffic coming from mobile devices, a poor mobile experience directly costs both rankings and conversions. Check that tap targets are large enough for a thumb, text is legible without zooming, and no content is cut off or requires horizontal scrolling. Our dedicated guide to mobile-first web design in Mauritius covers this in more depth.

HTTPS and Basic Security Hygiene

An SSL certificate (the padlock and HTTPS in the address bar) has been a confirmed Google ranking factor for years and is table stakes in 2026 — a site still serving over plain HTTP, or with an expired certificate triggering browser security warnings, will lose both trust and rankings. This sits alongside the broader security and update practices covered in our guide to website maintenance in Mauritius.

Structured Data (Schema Markup)

Schema markup is code added to your pages that explicitly labels what different pieces of content are — a business address, a product price, a review rating, a frequently asked question. It does not change what a human visitor sees, but it gives Google (and AI systems) unambiguous, machine-readable facts to work with, which can unlock rich results like star ratings, FAQ dropdowns and knowledge panel information directly in search results. Priority schema types for most Mauritius businesses:

  • LocalBusiness / Organization — name, address, phone number, opening hours.
  • FAQPage — for any page with a genuine frequently-asked-questions section.
  • Article / BlogPosting — for blog and guide content, including author and publish date.
  • Product and Review — for e-commerce sites, directly supporting star ratings in search results.

Google's Rich Results Test is the standard free tool to verify your schema is implemented correctly and eligible for enhanced search appearance.

URL Structure and Duplicate Content

Clean, descriptive URLs (/services/web-design rather than /page?id=482) help both users and search engines understand a page's content at a glance. Duplicate content — the same or near-identical content accessible at multiple URLs, common after a redesign or when a site accidentally serves both a WWW and non-WWW version without a redirect — splits ranking signals between the duplicates instead of consolidating them behind one strong page.

A Quick Self-Audit

  1. Run your homepage and top three service pages through Google PageSpeed Insights — note anything scoring below 50 on mobile.
  2. Search site:yourdomain.com on Google and confirm the pages you expect to see are actually indexed.
  3. Check your Search Console Core Web Vitals report for pages flagged as "poor" or "needs improvement."
  4. Test your homepage in the Rich Results Test to see what schema, if any, is currently detected.
  5. Click through your own site on a mobile phone using mobile data, not wifi, and note anything that feels slow or awkward.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should technical SEO be audited?

A full technical audit once or twice a year is reasonable for most SME websites, with Core Web Vitals and crawl errors monitored monthly via Search Console in between — problems are far cheaper to fix when caught early.

Can I fix technical SEO issues myself, or do I need a developer?

Some items — image compression, basic schema via a plugin, submitting a sitemap — are accessible to a non-technical site owner on platforms like WordPress. Core Web Vitals fixes involving JavaScript, render-blocking scripts or server configuration typically require a developer.

Does technical SEO matter if my content is genuinely excellent?

Yes. Excellent content on a page Google cannot crawl properly, or that takes eight seconds to load on mobile, will not rank — technical health is the precondition for content quality to matter at all.
